FULL TRANSCRIPT:
Welcome to Vegan Bytes, your go-to source for all things vegan. Today, we're diving into the world of seafood, or rather, the vegan-friendly alternative.
Albert Heijn, the largest retailer in the Netherlands, has made a splash with their new fish welfare policy. They're committed to ensuring 100% of their shrimp are electrically stunned by 2025, and they're saying goodbye to eyestalk ablation in their supply chain.
Think of it like this: it's like switching from a gas-guzzling car to an electric vehicle, but for shrimp. It's a big step forward for our little crustacean friends.
Albert Heijn is also teaming up with Klaas Puul, a major shrimp supplier, to make their tropical shrimp chain more sustainable and transparent. From April 2023, they'll be the first supermarket to make this switch.
Imagine a relay race, where each runner represents a step in the shrimp supply chain. Albert Heijn is ensuring each runner is passing the baton in the most eco-friendly and ethical way possible.
The feed for these shrimp will be made exclusively from deforestation-free soy, with fish oil and fishmeal partly replaced by plant-based algae oil and insect meal. It's like swapping out your regular burger for a Beyond Meat patty, but in the shrimp world.
By 2025, all shrimp will be farmed without eyestalk ablation and will be electrically stunned before being slaughtered. It's a big win for shrimp, and for those of us who care about animal welfare.
Albert Heijn is also actively improving the traceability of the Vietnamese shrimp chain and sponsoring research projects on animal welfare for farmed pangasius and salmon. It's like they're detectives, tracing the journey of each shrimp from the farm to your plate, ensuring each step is as ethical as possible.
But it's not all smooth sailing. Each fish species presents its own challenges, and Albert Heijn is constantly in dialogue with suppliers to improve fish welfare. It's like a never-ending negotiation, with the welfare of fish at stake.
So, next time you're shopping for seafood alternatives, remember Albert Heijn's commitment to fish welfare. It's a reminder that every step we take towards a more ethical and sustainable world counts.
That's all for today's episode of Vegan Bytes. Stay tuned for more vegan-friendly news, and remember, every bite counts!
