Picture this: Queen Latifah, in a fake PSA, defending milk-drinkers against 'milk-shaming'. Sounds absurd, right? Well, it's a reality, thanks to a campaign funded by Dairy Management Inc and the Milk Processor Education Program. They've spent millions to convince you that "real milk" is the best, even though plant-based milks now account for 16% of the market, with only 0.1% of the subsidies given to the dairy industry.

But the plant-based sector isn't backing down. From oat milk companies using quirky marketing to wean you off dairy, to street artists calling out the dairy industry's misleading claims, the battle is on.

The dairy industry's tactics have been questionable, to say the least. They've spent over $100M since 2008 to restrict the use of dairy-related terms on dairy-free products. One ad, featuring actress Aubrey Plaza, even faced backlash for potentially misleading consumers about the quality of plant-based milks.

But the plant-based sector is fighting back. Activists like Praxis and non-profit The Truth About Dairy are launching campaigns to expose the dairy industry's lies. They're using billboards, posters, and even undercover footage from dairy factory farms to reveal the truth behind terms like "happy cow" and "locally sourced".

Meanwhile, plant-based non-profit Switch4Good, led by Olympian Dotsie Bausch, launched the Killer Milk campaign, highlighting a study that blamed cow’s milk as the leading cause of fatal anaphylaxis in schoolchildren.

Despite the dairy industry's stronghold, plant-based alternatives are gaining ground. Analysts predict that by 2026, plant-based milk alternatives could take up 30% of the total dairy dollar share.
