FULL TRANSCRIPT:
Welcome to Vegan Bytes, your two-minute dose of all things vegan. Today, we're diving into the Indian vegan market, thanks to a survey by the Good Food Institute India.
First off, awareness about plant-based meat and dairy is on the rise in India, especially in metro cities and among higher income groups. Social media is the main driver of this awareness, with word of mouth also playing a significant role.
However, despite this awareness, trials of vegan products are still relatively low. Only 23% have tried milk alternatives, and a mere 11% have given plant-based meat a shot. On the bright side, 82% of those who have tried plant-based milk say they'd consider buying it again, and the figure is a promising 72% for vegan meat.
Interestingly, trying one category of vegan products often leads to trying others. For instance, 40% of those who tried meat alternatives also purchased vegan dairy.
Purchase intent is high, with 43% of households familiar with plant-based dairy intending to buy again. For meat alternatives, this figure stands at 33%.
When it comes to buying, supermarkets are still king, with 57% of households buying alt-meat products from supermarkets, compared to 26% from e-commerce platforms.
In terms of products, chicken alternatives are the most popular, with soy milk being the most common dairy alternative. However, almond milk is catching up fast.
The main factors driving Indians towards plant-based meat are protein content, convenience, and easy cooking. For vegan dairy, protein content, health benefits, and affordability are key.
However, taste is a significant barrier for repeat purchases. Poor taste attributes and high costs deter many from buying plant-based meat and dairy again.
In conclusion, to encourage trial and repeat purchases, manufacturers need to focus on taste, affordability, and convenience.
That's all for today's episode of Vegan Bytes. Stay tuned for more vegan insights, and remember, every bite counts!
